#Microblog Mondays 1: Insomnia

Half past 12. Struck by insomnia, while the rest of the household sleep!

All the noise around has died down slowly over the past hour. No more passing cars or honking bikes. Who’d imagine this silence during the day with a temple nearby that continuously plays songs and chants all day? Glad to have that respite, any day!

The only sound right now is that of my fingers tapping away on the keyboard and the humming of the ceiling fan in a typical rhythm, a kind of droning hum. Far away, all the neighbourhood street dogs are calling out. They’re fighting, or so it seems!

The sound of silence breaks my train of thoughts. I do not wish to wake up tired and sleepy but I’m afraid that’s exactly how it will be tomorrow when I have to wake up at an unearthly hour and begin my day.

Music couldn’t rescue me today but perhaps counting sheep will. Wonder if it was because of the evening tea that I badly needed to keep me going this evening when I was almost half dead with fatigue? Just a passing thought.

Okay, I need to switch off my laptop, take off the earplugs, switch off the lights and head to bed…Shut my eyes and start counting. 1-2-3. Back to the basics, once again!

Did you ever struggle with insomnia? How do you deal with it when you have a busy day coming the next morning?

  1. I do struggle with insomnia. The only thing that has helped is that we turn off screens a half hour before bed and read. It doesn’t always work, but I have noticed that I’m sleeping a bit better.

    1. Oh, yes, I do switch off from everything digital. On that night, I actually stayed put in bed trying to sleep and when nothing seemed to work for almost an hour or so, I got fidgety and woke up, switched back on my laptop and started typing out the post…although, shouldn’t do that next time, I know! On most days, it helps to read though 🙂

  2. I know how it is, Esha! These days every night sleep eludes me. It’s mix of tiredness, discomfort and frustration. Morning 5.45 alarm buzzes and I will get up more tired. Thankfully I enjoyed relaxed sleeps until couple of months back. 🙂 I noticed that when I recite in mind the prayer songs I get distracted and go to sleep eventually. Hope your sleep gets better soon!

    1. Oh, I’m so sorry to hear this Vinitha! This is the most difficult stage of pregnancy and the only consolation is that you’re nearly there…this will be over soon 🙂 Thanks for wishing me well. I hope so too!

  3. Oh yes. It happens to me on certain days. And it happened to me on Sunday night. I wasn’t able to sleep because the mind was working on overtime weaving ideas and stories of what I was going to write for my Monday post. I saw the clock at half-past twelve and appreciated what a great story teller my mind has become. I was even laughing to myself when in my head, I gave a hilarious frame to the idea on which I eventually ended up writing a serious post in the morning. I finally switched on the lights and picked up the book to read to divert the mind. I slept at 2 and woke up at 5. You could imagine what kind of a day I must have had yesterday.

    1. I can see your situation so well because I’ve been there too, Anamika. In the midst of all the chores through the day and later in the night, my mind too delves into the possibilities of turning a particular situation into a post and even the slightest trace of sleep eludes me then. Haha…the perils f being a blogger, I say! 😀

  4. Can you imagine i had this insomnia – a very bad kind through out my pregnancy. When the doctor asked you should get rest even during the day I had to answer I can’t even sleep at night. I used to sleep exhausted around 5 in the morning. I thought may be my baby was preparing me for the sleepless days ahead. But ironically Bluey used to sleep throughout the night right for his first month!

  5. I know what you mean. I don’t have insomnia but some days there is a lot on my mind and I find it hard to sleep. Usually not as bad. But yes, my mind keeps calculating how many hours of sleep I am going to get in such a night. Remember my post about that birthday party at 12?

    1. I know exactly what you mean. I too get into thinking about things weighing on my mind at that nocturnal hour when sleep eludes. I am sorry cant recall that post. Send me the link if you have it handy and will go through it. Trying to go back to green tea from today if that helps!
