Silence: The Power of Quiet in a World Full of Noise
by Thich Nhat Hanh

This is another gem of a book, by the Buddhist monk and teacher Thich Nhat Hanh, whom I admire, revere and ardently follow!
In today’s world of 24/7 connectivity, we are all perpetually inundated by noise—and this isn’t just the sound, but the barrage of texts, emails, social media, notification alerts, alarms and reminders etc. This is leading us to a point when we are incapable of being comfortable with the idea of pure silence—some of us even agitated by the absence of noise than the presence of it.
This book shows us, how, by using the power of mindfulness as our practice, we are able to filter out all the clamour and the noise from our minds and our hearts, so we can hear what is really important—the eloquent sound of silence. It is through the silence that we can open ourselves to the beauty and wonder of the world right around us; to life and love and beyond. It’s a book that will make you want to experience a meal without the distraction of your favorite magazine or Facebook on your phone. It’ll make you want to take a walk in nature without your iPod, or enjoy a car ride without being tempted to check your Instagram feed!
Stemming from his meditation and mindfulness practices, Thich Nhat Hanh offers powerful and yet extremely simple and practical insights into how important it is to be present—to be in the moment, to tune in with the breath, to seek out the silence and just be.
As someone who has read many of his works, I have to say that he does delve on similar things in most of his books. However, every book has a unique theme and you can see how each of them are interconnected through the profound life lessons that he shares with us. In fact, there is always something very calming and soothing about his words in this book too, that holds your attention, gently nudges you to practice sitting in silence and make you think.
Practicing silence, according to Hanh, is a powerful tool that helps us cultivate deep listening and mindfulness, transforming a situation and our lives on a single breath. The subtitle of the book—The Power of Quiet in a World Full of Noise—has been a great reminder for many, like myself, to take some time to sit in silence and stillness, every single day, no matter how busy the day is going to be. This, to me has now come to be non-negotiable. I spend anything between fifteen to thirty minutes every day, practicing mindfulness meditation and the clarity and peace that comes with it, helps reset my mental frame to prepare for the day in the best possible way.
Life advice, given in such a gentle and clear tone does not come by often. There is so much to love about this book. If you’re looking for a little less noise in your life, I’d really recommend this book.
