Chakras: Wheels of Life by Anodea Judith

This book, Chakras: Wheels of Life is a great introduction for beginners who are looking for a thorough understanding of the chakra system. For the uninitiated, the Chakras are energy points in the human body, often visualised as spinning wheels or disks, that impact our physical, emotional, mental and psychological well being. Their origins are in Hinduism and the science of yoga, from several thousand years ago.
At a time, when there appears to be a renewed focus on spiritual exploration, Judith’s book is a masterpiece that summarises the seven-chakra system and the physical, psychological and spiritual implications of working through and balancing these centres that are located along the spine in the upper part of our body.
The book does an exceptional job of explaining the seven chakras in detail and their relevance to life, love, wellbeing, spirituality and growth. Progressing through the book, one learns that it is actually an integration of a vast amount of learning on Yoga and the Chakra system from the various Yoga disciplines, rooted in the ancient Indian spiritual practices, along with developmental psychology and other spiritual disciplines like the Kabbalah and the Jungian theory. What sets this book apart is the user-friendly approach and accessibility. What I loved most about this book, was how complex concepts were discussed in a clear and engaging manner, making it accessible to readers of all levels.
I came across this book in 2021, at the height of the pandemic, whilst I was grappling with a couple of health issues and since I had no prior knowledge of how the chakras work, I ended up joining an online workshop, that introduced me to the basics of this very interesting system. On being recommended this book, I picked it up to improve my understanding of the area and I must say it was nothing short of life-altering for me.
Reading it actually helped me understand why and where my health issues were stemming from. This knowledge, believe it or not, became so powerful that it changed my life. The book has answers to so many of the questions that have plagued me for long, even going so far back as my childhood were some of the problems lay rooted. By understanding the functions and locations of each of the chakras, I was better able to tune into the various imbalances and blockages affecting my energy flow —especially those impacting my mental and emotional health. It was a revelation when I understood how the root cause of the physical problems lay in the mind but was stored in the body itself—something that I was unaware of, until that point.
As I worked on balancing and opening the chakras, energy began to flow freely, and I found my way to vitality, creativity, and most importantly, a sense of well-being, that I hadn’t had in years. Thus began a new chapter in my life—a journey that proved to be not only physically transformative, but spiritually too!
It was around the same time that I embarked on my health transformation journey—which involved course correction on multiple aspects of my life. Within a year, I found myself, lighter by 13 kgs, having shed not just the adipose but a significant volume of mental and emotional baggage as well, that had been piling up for years!
This is one book that definitely opened up a new realm for me, deepening my connection to my inner self and leading me to delve inwards with more depth and clarity. Today, as I teach mindfulness meditation to the young and old alike, I realise how much I owe my learning to this phase of life that got me into chakra healing and energy practices.
As I sum up, let me remind you, dear reader, if you or anyone you know is interested in learning about the chakras, this book is definitely the place to start. It is an easy read and an engaging one, and one that you’d would love to dip into, to better your understanding of an amazing system of holistic well being.

I have been growing an interest in learning about the seven chakras. I think this book will be a great one for the beginning level reading. What is your recommendation? And Esha, I also want a full-length blog post from you on the chakras.
This sounds so fascinating. I have read about chakras but never in so much detail. Will add this to my list as I am curious to find out more after reading your review.
