This post is written for Day 1 of The Write Tribe Festival of Words June 2018.
An adage that I once read, goes something like this—
If you don’t learn from your past, you’ll be doomed to repeat it.
Often times, as the wise would say, we live by the choices we make,
Strange though it may seem to be; well, it should ne’er be the case.
Each morning brings us chances new, to invent our lives again,
Say no to dead relationships and dreary jobs for gain.
Pausing, doubting, questioning; to reflect and review again,
‘Think hard’—our past reminds us, ‘Who brought you joy? And pain?’
‘Think hard’—says life, ‘I’m giving you ‘nother chance that you might take’,
‘To change, learn and experiment; perhaps to set things straight?’
‘Think hard—Which matters of the mind and heart brought bliss unparalleled?
‘Whose warmth and friendship did you cherish most? And moments you dearly held?’
So, look back, if you must, at times; let life lessons follow you,
Just don’t let the past define you; they’re stepping stones for you.

Beautiful and well said!
Learning from the past is what makes us human. I thoroughly enjoyed your lovely, reflective poem.
So beautifully penned 🙂 We always have a choice 🙂
Very true. Beautiful verses. So true. The past has been bountiful..
What an interesting poem on the prompt. The past is a tough teacher.
Beautiful take on the prompt. Full of positivity and guides the reader to introspect.
Loved the lines:
So, look back, if you must, at times; let life lessons follow you,
Just don’t let the past define you; they’re stepping stones for you.
Keep Writing Esha, #WriteBravely :).
This is a beautiful way to express that one must take lessons from the past and use them as stepping stones rather than stay affected or engrossed in the past throughout our lives. This is the best take I have read on this prompt, Esha 🙂
Warm, kind and inspiring.
Very beautiful expression. As we can’t change the past, the best is to learn from it and move on.
What a beautiful poem Esha. The past is a lesson that we learn and move on.
Beautifully written – the past is just the stepping stones! Step on it and move ahead!
Mituldi, I hear you..tumi ar ami eki naukay..sei janyao the thoughts are also similar..love and hugs..just praying
Well said. Past is just those stepping stones. Step on those and walk forward. Beautifully written. 🙂
Yes! the best thing we can do with the past is learn from it!
Well said, past doesn’t matter nearly as much as we think. We must leave it behind and used it as an inspiration to move ahead and reinvent ourselves!
Yes, look back if we must, but our past doesn’t define us. You said it all so eloquently in this poem, Esha. 🙂
good one! Very thought-provoking..
Very nicely written in poetic form which I love. But I hope we are not doomed to repeat a lesson not learned as sometimes we just don’t get it 🙂
