A flash fiction, based on the prompt Red Roses from The Frangipani Creative group!

She watched as they came in, one by one, to offer solace to the family.

The room felt heavy with emotion. Not a single eye that did not seem moist. The girls sat next to their father, their hands folded, heads slightly bent forward. It was nearly time for the priest to begin the ceremony.

People came in, mostly carrying garlands and placing them before the photograph, that was beautifully adorned in white. Some brought bouquets with them. The gentle fragrance of white tuberoses wafted through the room.

As the rituals went underway, a young man arrived at the door, carrying with him a bunch of bright red roses, just the kind she most loved.

Her heart skipped a beat when she saw him.

Longing to smell the roses, she reached out for them, only to realise she didn’t belong to this world anymore.

    1. Thank you so much, Keerthi! So glad you liked it. Your kind words made my day!! I really wish I would write fiction more often.

  1. It is beautiful and sad at the same time with an element of mystery.
It is so nice for all of us to begin writing with the prompts. Without this initiative by Corinne, we must have kept on with our rusting process, I feel so.
