Upon A Rainy Day

The rain whispers in my ears
the half forgotten songs of childhood,
and memories that haunt the heart,
dancing precariously like raindrops
at the edge of a leaf,
ready to fall upon my parched soul.

Ma’s cooking wafts through the house,
the swirling smoke insidiously creeps in,
from the firewood burning by the roadside.
wet shoes sit on the wooden stand,
the brollies making pools on the floor,
while we sit around a crackling fire,
watching the rain trickle down the window
and the soot-covered beams above,
holding the memories of an entire lifetime in them.

Memories can be treacherous,
so I tread cautiously,
bracing before I fall and bleed.
The tinge of sadness and pain
in those half forgotten songs
leave me longing for more—

Is it a longing, or a quest?—I ask myself,
to revisit the home and the hearth
we left behind many moons ago.

I hold myself tight in my seat
lest I knock my head
watching the train of cars,
having traversed time
and childhood, both.

The rain batters the window
as I watch the world go by.
