Breaking the Rules

A poem dedicated to women and their constant battles to live life on their own terms, in a predominantly patriarchal world. Writing for the weekly #FictionMonday linkup, hosted by my good friend Vinitha Dileep on her blog, Reflections.

Breaking the Rules

Staying in the cloister was safe,

But no, you never wanted that!

You weren’t the one to sit quietly,

contained within a barricade.

Remember, the time when they built fences,

And how you pushed them all aside?

Or, how you shifted the context

So they could see things with new eyes?

Remember, how they pinned you to the ground?

and how they caged your unchained soul?

And when they set you on fire,

Like a phoenix, from the ashes, you rose!

Do you remember, the day you stepped out of line?

The one that nearly wrecked you?

Well, if you hadn’t broken the rules then,

the rules, by now, would have broken you.

  1. Lovely and a deep poem, dear Esha!
You read already my point of view and even it’s a text for the ‘Fiction Monday’ the ideas are real and sincere.
The balance of the Nature must be kept and all the rules that brake the equilibrium must be cancelled…
Otherwise we all suffer the consequences.
Thank you, dear friend! Have a beautiful week ahead! <3

  2. This is deep, Esha! I loved it. “Well, if you hadn’t broken the rules then,

the rules, by now, would have broken you.” How profound!
I am so glad you wrote this beautiful poem and shared it with us.

  3. Oh, I loved this, Esha!!
Yes, please, break the rules, girl, and live your life, the one you are meant to live ♡♡
