Decision Time

“If you obsess over whether you are making the right decision, you are basically assuming that the universe will reward you for one thing and punish you for another. The universe has no fixed agenda. Once you make any decision, it works around that decision. There is no right or wrong, only a series of possibilities that shift with each thought, feeling, and action that you experience.”

—Deepak Chopra in The Book of Secrets: Unlocking the Hidden Dimensions of Your Life

Most of us find it very stressful when we’re facing the challenge of making critical life choices. It is not unusual for us to go through life oblivious to what thoughts we are thinking and what actions we are taking. Every single decision we make today will shape our current realities as much as our tomorrows.

How often do we even realise that we are being shaped by the choices we made yesterday and are continuing to make every single day?

As it happens, I am currently caught in a flurry of decision-making activities regarding a few key areas of my life and as you might well imagine, that’s where my struggles begin—yes, it’s having to choose between my options. The decision is critical to my wellbeing and I won’t lie, even if the thought in itself is so liberating, the question I’m asking myself here is—How do I figure out now, which of the two options, will turn out to be the right one?

Wish it were as easy as flipping a switch in my brain and letting my rational self determine the perfect choice.

But, of course, it’s not.

The way I see it, every choice I opt for, will symbolically be a battle between my conscious rational mind and the subconscious emotional mind. So, the moot question here is—

What should be the key to good decision-making?

And how does one know which side will win?

My experience says it’s safer to go with my intuition because my gut feeling has always led me to the right places. Well, mostly.

But, and here is a big BUT, there is always that element of chance that things may not work out the preferred way? So, how does one decide, after all?

*********

How do you make big decisions, dear reader? How do you convince your head which one to go for, when you’re caught in a quandary?
