In most Japanese shrines, there is a dedicated space where tons of wooden tablets are hung overlapping each other. These are called the ‘Ema’ (with an image of a drawn horse), which visitors dedicate to the Gods to make their wishes come true.
I believe faith works wonders. It’s amazing how it moves mountains, shows us the light, brings hope and paves the path when we can see none. In my experience, some days that’s all we need to put one foot behind the other and get on with life.

I’m always moved by such expressions of faith, Esha. I wonder about the story behind each request. Did they get what they asked for? Or did they receive the grace to accept whatever outcome came their way?
This is a similar concept to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. Amazing how despite the religious differences, we all revert to similar behaviors when we want something from God!
That is an interesting picture and an equally interesting practice. But yes, what is life without some faith?
It is, Reema! Especially during those phases when the questions are many and the answers but a few!
Faith in ourselves and the universe is what makes us go on despite every stumbling block.

Wouldn’t it be lovely to see all those wooden signs. It reminds me that all of us are in this together, struggling with things, including our faith at times.

That’s a beautiful quote, Esha. Yes, faith can move mountains. I am alive to see this day purely because of my faith. But faith is easily mocked also, seen as false hope, a fool’s dream. I am seeing these wooden tablets for the first, didn’t know about it either. Thank you for sharing, Esha. 🙂

I believe majority of people in our world are living each day solely due to faith. Their faith keeps them see light in the darkest moment. One doesn’t necessarily need to believe in higher power to hope for a better future. Loved the picture.😊
You are spot on, Rajlakshmi. I can see that happen in our everyday lives. To a great extent in mine too. That’s like a constant amidst all the variables that knock us out from time to time! Thanks for the appreciation Raj!
When I was little my parents sent me to Catholic school & they taught us that God is everywhere and I took that literally & personally it gives me hope and settles my heart that I am never alone because the Lord is watching over me and mine. My faith is mine & I don’t expect all to have the same, but we all believe in God in some form or another, but it’s still the same. Have a wonderful day my friend. Oh really? What a co-incidence…I did too! The Catholic convent I went to, was run by the Salesian Sisters who instilled in us the thought that the Lord is always watching over us. This was something that I, coming from a Hindu family, was very easily able to relate! I strongly believe in God and that all Gods are one no matter how many different names we have for Him! Each of the Japanese alphabets or words, whatever is inscribed on that big piece of wood, is a piece of art in itself and together with lots of wooden tablets with inscriptions makes the picture interesting.
Faith is a big word for now. Everyday it seems like there is no end to hopelessness and why should we keep on going in this way and then a blog post like this one comes along with the right message – To have faith in the goodness of mankind. I have an answer to my why now.
Yes, the tablets are all unique pieces of art! The drawings look so pretty. I’m glad you found your faith in mankind! There is a reason that we go through hard times to instil faith in ourselves—and that inherent belief that man can also be good must be enough reason for us to believe in humanity! There are some good people in this world for us to still cling onto that faith, I guess.

I am wondering if I can chose any one wish that can go on one such tablet. I guess I can chose “Keep Faith alive in me” and hang it there. That is how much “faith” keeps me going one day at a time.

When we were caring for my mother in law and her disabled son (along with another inlaw) the last year or so of her life, we had to take a lot of things on faith. To be honest, our faith didn’t always pan out, but it did keep us going.
I can imagine what it must have been like, and so was it for me last year when I was struggling with my parents being terribly ill and my faith shaking every now and then but eventually that is what leads us on when everything else is gone.
