Decision Time

“If you obsess over whether you are making the right decision, you are basically assuming that the universe will reward you for one thing and punish you for another. The universe has no fixed agenda. Once you make any decision, it works around that decision. There is no right or wrong, only a series of possibilities that shift with each thought, feeling, and action that you experience.”

—Deepak Chopra in The Book of Secrets: Unlocking the Hidden Dimensions of Your Life

Most of us find it very stressful when we’re facing the challenge of making critical life choices. It is not unusual for us to go through life oblivious to what thoughts we are thinking and what actions we are taking. Every single decision we make today will shape our current realities as much as our tomorrows.

How often do we even realise that we are being shaped by the choices we made yesterday and are continuing to make every single day?

As it happens, I am currently caught in a flurry of decision-making activities regarding a few key areas of my life and as you might well imagine, that’s where my struggles begin—yes, it’s having to choose between my options. The decision is critical to my wellbeing and I won’t lie, even if the thought in itself is so liberating, the question I’m asking myself here is—How do I figure out now, which of the two options, will turn out to be the right one?

Wish it were as easy as flipping a switch in my brain and letting my rational self determine the perfect choice.

But, of course, it’s not.

The way I see it, every choice I opt for, will symbolically be a battle between my conscious rational mind and the subconscious emotional mind. So, the moot question here is—

What should be the key to good decision-making?

And how does one know which side will win?

My experience says it’s safer to go with my intuition because my gut feeling has always led me to the right places. Well, mostly.

But, and here is a big BUT, there is always that element of chance that things may not work out the preferred way? So, how does one decide, after all?

*********

How do you make big decisions, dear reader? How do you convince your head which one to go for, when you’re caught in a quandary?

  1. Ah, that’s the struggle, right? I tend to choose with my heart. Then again, if I don’t act quickly enough on my choices, my head can talk me right out of it! Mostly, though, it’s the heart that leads.

  2. Intuition is the best Esha but when I find that when I am caught in the spiral of second guessing then even this fails. I try to go with the flow and do what feels good. All the best with your decision making.

  3. Mostly, I go with the flow. It’s difficult to choose at times. When there is a battle between my head and heart, I listen to my heart and do what feels right in that moment. Thoughtful post, Esha. 😊

  4. Listen to your gut, Esha! It is telling you the right thing.

All the best to whatever is it that you decide.

    Lots of love.

  5. How to choose! That is indeed a tough question. Mostly I go by what my heart tells me and that has at times led me to be hurt, but it has also taught me lessons that I would perhaps have never learnt otherwise.

  6. I’m a great believer in listening to your heart (gut). I used to always go with my head and played safe – there was a mortgage to be paid and food to put on the table etc, but now that I’m a bit older and more settled, I go with “what do I need to do that resonates with my heart and wellness?” The last big one was quitting my job – it was a huge risk, but I’m so grateful I finally looked after myself instead of worrying about everyone else. Good luck with your big decision x

  7. Whenever I chose not to go with my intuitions I had to face disaster as a consequence. My husband is so much aware of that phenomenon by now that he never forces me to go against my gut. I think we always know what is the right decision even if it appears as not right to others or at that moment. Whatever decision you make I am certain that it is going to be the right one, Esha. And remember, you have to put yourself first. That is not selfish. That’s what we human beings are supposed to be doing. Universe will guide you and your decision-making process will go smoothly. <3 🙂

  8. Listen to your gut, I would say, and put your whole thoughts into it that the path your gut tells you to choose will definitely work out. Your certainty will give the universe the precise instructions to make it work for you. I wish you all the best for the decision you make.

  9. What a great question! Thank you for your reflection! I try to trust my gut. I haven’t needed to make any consequential decisions in recent years but I have made a few in my life that completely changed the direction my life was headed – and I don’t regret any of those decisions. That said – I don’t think that makes the process any easier. Best to you in your decision making – may it all lead to blessing.

  10. Head or heart? Always a tough choice! In recent years, I’ve been following my heart and it hasn’t let me down.
Wishing you the very best through the process and the consequences of your decisions, Esha.

  11. Oh my! That is such a tough question, Esha!
I pray that I have made the right decision, and then go ahead and do it. Well, now that I think about it, I don’t remember when I made a major decision. The last one I made years ago, was made by listening to my heart. Now, though, I try and use my head. The heart gives quite stupid ideas sometimes. It’s best to use the head, or go with what your gut says. Uff, this is so confusing! ;P
WIsh you the best Esha, in whatever decisions you make.
    Love!
