Because I’m Different
My Life is my choice, though strange it may seem,
What’s absurd to you, forms the core of my being.
My words don’t touch you, my thoughts you can’t feel,
Hate me, despise me, but I’d never conceal.
You slur me and force me to cover up my legs,
Take back my freedom, and stifle my breath,
You unleash your hatred, and strike me instead,
By the roadside, some evening, battered and dead.
So, listen up, I won’t cower, nor bow down to you,
I’ll rise from the ashes, like the Phoenix—anew,
shame me or slam me, I’m different, you see,
I’ll never be your kind, ’cause I’ll always be Me.

Linking up with Reema and Vinay for #WednesdayVerses.
The prompt this week is—’Different’
Nice lines. You’ve penned down the thoughts of women across the world….there’s no stopping us!!
Thank you so much, Janaki. You are right…there is no stopping us. If only we can say this to ourselves every time we are down, it would make us stronger than ever.
Well said! Kudos to you. Best way to live!
Great affirmation, Esha!
Thank you dear Vidya. It is a reminder to womenkind all over the world to pride ourselves for being who we are.
Such powerful verses, Esha! Amazing 🙂
Thanks a lot, Parul. Glad you think so. 🙂
The verse has sheer power and being self-matters than anything else, doesn’t matter if some cannot take it. It’s all about shining above everyone, Esha. Superb.
So glad to hear this from you, Vishal. Thanks a lot! A lot of the time we need these affirmations because life seems to pin us down all too often for being the person that we are. Not everyone can take it, you know.
Powerful words, Esha. We’ll remain the way we want to be. It might make people despise us, but that’s the way we would remain true to our own selves… 🙂
Thanks so very much. You said it, Maniparna. Yes, it is a struggle to be the person that we are, in a world that constantly tries to change us. Women suffer all the time because what is accepted in a man is never so in case of a woman. We are slotted in boxes that are predefined and this is so wrong.
It’s very difficult the mindset of the people. Still, hope this will change someday…
Someday, perhaps, Maniparna!
Being yourself is the best thing to be! Loved this. Thanks for linking up with #WednesdayVerses 🙂
Thanks, Reema. Glad you liked it. Happy to link up. 🙂
Ah, the fire in the chest, the beauty in the veins. How it all comes through. Powerful lines, Esha!
Thanks a lot, Shailaja. So glad you think so. Attempted to give form to a barrage of thoughts that tumbled over in the shape of poetry. 🙂
In Love with your words! If we give a ear to everything, I guess we’d feel we’d better be deaf. Instead turning a deaf ear and focusing on ourselves is the best thing there is and believing ourselves is the best gift ever.
Absolutely the way to be. Stay you and true to you.
Thank you so much, Rachna. That’s my motto actually! So glad you stopped by and shared your thoughts on the post.
Beautiful and expressive……. 👌
Thank you so much, Monika. Your words mean a lot to me.
Just brilliant dear . Loved the flow of words .. the fluidity of thought and yes your inimitable style !
Yes I am different ! And thats how its meant to be ❤️
Thanks for your wonderful words of appreciation, Aru’di. Some days we seem to find the words a little easily than other days…this must be one of those moments. I’m happy I’m taking the time out to focus on other things…keeps me sane in the midst of the daily drudgery. 🙂
That’s the way to be. If women had bowed down back in the early 1900s we still wouldn’t have voting rights or even go for higher studies. Loved your poem 😀
Well said, Rajlakshmi! Women have fought all along to earn their rights and still do be it at home or the world outside. I am with you on this one too! Grateful to those pioneers who made it easy for us.
These verses remind me of a quote from Dr. Seuss – “Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” 🙂
Thanks a lot, Shantala. Glad to see you stop by the blog and share your thoughts.
