Being Different | #Poetry

Because I’m Different

My Life is my choice, though strange it may seem,

What’s absurd to you, forms the core of my being.

My words don’t touch you, my thoughts you can’t feel,

Hate me, despise me, but I’d never conceal.

You slur me and force me to cover up my legs,

Take back my freedom, and stifle my breath,

You unleash your hatred, and strike me instead,

By the roadside, some evening, battered and dead.

So, listen up, I won’t cower, nor bow down to you,

I’ll rise from the ashes, like the Phoenix—anew,

shame me or slam me, I’m different, you see,

I’ll never be your kind, ’cause I’ll always be Me.

    1. Thank you so much, Janaki. You are right…there is no stopping us. If only we can say this to ourselves every time we are down, it would make us stronger than ever.

  1. The verse has sheer power and being self-matters than anything else, doesn’t matter if some cannot take it. It’s all about shining above everyone, Esha. Superb.

    1. So glad to hear this from you, Vishal. Thanks a lot! A lot of the time we need these affirmations because life seems to pin us down all too often for being the person that we are. Not everyone can take it, you know.

    1. Thanks so very much. You said it, Maniparna. Yes, it is a struggle to be the person that we are, in a world that constantly tries to change us. Women suffer all the time because what is accepted in a man is never so in case of a woman. We are slotted in boxes that are predefined and this is so wrong.

    1. Thanks a lot, Shailaja. So glad you think so. Attempted to give form to a barrage of thoughts that tumbled over in the shape of poetry. 🙂

  2. In Love with your words! If we give a ear to everything, I guess we’d feel we’d better be deaf. Instead turning a deaf ear and focusing on ourselves is the best thing there is and believing ourselves is the best gift ever.

  3. Just brilliant dear . Loved the flow of words .. the fluidity of thought and yes your inimitable style !
Yes I am different ! And thats how its meant to be ❤️

    1. Thanks for your wonderful words of appreciation, Aru’di. Some days we seem to find the words a little easily than other days…this must be one of those moments. I’m happy I’m taking the time out to focus on other things…keeps me sane in the midst of the daily drudgery. 🙂

  4. That’s the way to be. If women had bowed down back in the early 1900s we still wouldn’t have voting rights or even go for higher studies. Loved your poem 😀

    1. Well said, Rajlakshmi! Women have fought all along to earn their rights and still do be it at home or the world outside. I am with you on this one too! Grateful to those pioneers who made it easy for us.

  5. These verses remind me of a quote from Dr. Seuss – “Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” 🙂
