Art of the Week – 1 | #wordlesswednesday

Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.

—Thomas Merton

Last week, I made two pieces of art. Both were made with white gel pens on black paper. It wasn’t the best of weekends but it turned out decent because I added a dash of creativity to it. In effect, this helped me brush away the dust that had gathered in my soul, with a few fine strokes that not only helped me reinstate faith in my abilities but also lifted me into a state of pure bliss, made possible only through mindful practice. It was a win-win.

The first piece is a tree—a symbol of stability, strength and resilience. To me, the metaphor of a tree with roots spreading out on the ground also refers to staying grounded and rooted to Earth—our home. It also symbolizes growth and progress, particularly when we see the years of silent, quiet growth that has turned the sapling of yesterday into the sturdy tree of today. There might be more ways of interpreting it, but I’m happy with this version for now.

The Tree Of Life

The second piece, an extension of the tree metaphor above, is a leaf, ornately presented in the form of Zentangle art. The patterns in white have been used to symbolize the circadian rhythms—a sleep-wake cycle that refers to the endogenous oscillation (biological clock, in other words) of every life form on this planet.

The Leaf

This year, I’m making room for my creative pursuits despite having a crazy schedule. I’m ready to immerse myself into every artistic expression that speaks to my soul because of a gnawing fear that reminds me time is running out.

Do you love to indulge in art too? What other creative pursuits do you follow as part of your everyday routine?
