Art of the Week – 1 | #wordlesswednesday

Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.

—Thomas Merton

Last week, I made two pieces of art. Both were made with white gel pens on black paper. It wasn’t the best of weekends but it turned out decent because I added a dash of creativity to it. In effect, this helped me brush away the dust that had gathered in my soul, with a few fine strokes that not only helped me reinstate faith in my abilities but also lifted me into a state of pure bliss, made possible only through mindful practice. It was a win-win.

The first piece is a tree—a symbol of stability, strength and resilience. To me, the metaphor of a tree with roots spreading out on the ground also refers to staying grounded and rooted to Earth—our home. It also symbolizes growth and progress, particularly when we see the years of silent, quiet growth that has turned the sapling of yesterday into the sturdy tree of today. There might be more ways of interpreting it, but I’m happy with this version for now.

The Tree Of Life

The second piece, an extension of the tree metaphor above, is a leaf, ornately presented in the form of Zentangle art. The patterns in white have been used to symbolize the circadian rhythms—a sleep-wake cycle that refers to the endogenous oscillation (biological clock, in other words) of every life form on this planet.

The Leaf

This year, I’m making room for my creative pursuits despite having a crazy schedule. I’m ready to immerse myself into every artistic expression that speaks to my soul because of a gnawing fear that reminds me time is running out.

Do you love to indulge in art too? What other creative pursuits do you follow as part of your everyday routine?

  1. The art is so beautiful. And yes, it is important that we make time to do the things we love despite our crazy schedules. This is what I’ve trying to do but yes it takes a lot of motivation and dedication. Looking forward to see more of your artwork.

    1. Thank you so much, Reema. I know how tricky it is to find motivation on a regular basis, so I totally get you. I’m also trying to keep up with my intentions to create more immersive experiences and indulging in art is one of the key means of achieving that goal. A lot of juggling with everyday roles will however be a challenge, in my case but I’m keeping at it, just as I manage to do some blogging every week.

  2. White on black is my new favourite. Your artwork looks absolutely beautiful. The tree is so well done. What impressed me even more is the meaning behind them and what they symbolize. Soulful. You have such a way with words.

    1. Thanks, Raj. You’re too kind. I love your White on Black drawings…in awe of them, really! Just tried my hand on this because it was on my mind for months. I wish I had more time to draw more often. Too much happening in life right now! Sigh!

I’m so glad to see you stop by the blog and share your feedback. Means so much to me. <3

  3. I don’t have an artistic bone in my body, so I can’t really create art, but I love to see the creative sketches so many of you guys come up with on social media.

This is so pretty. Glad you are making time for more creative pursuits.

    1. So glad to hear from you, Shanaya! Yes, juggling the many roles and the daily to-do list alongside my work takes away all the time, but trying to get there. Thanks for the kind words.

  4. I saw both of these on Instagram, Esha and loved your art. I am not at all Artistic but yes, in my day plannr, I do use some crayons and that itself makes me happy. So I totally get what you mean. Please continue to hone this. <3

    1. Thank you so much, Parul. I understand your point. As long as you enjoy doing your thing, which is basically whatever makes you happy, be it drawing or colouring, you will derive joy out of it. I’m doing this whenever I can squeeze some time out of my schedule. Not easy though, but when I do, totally worth it! Will definitely take your advice. 🙂

  5. This is so so so pretty, Esha. Art is vital for survival, be it of any form. I have drawing and painting too, but haven’t been able to indulge in it for a while. Need to make some time for it now. Thank you for this beautiful reminder.

    1. Thank you so much, Soumya! I know the challenge you face, juggling your priorities, but I’d still say, snatch a few minutes here and there because in the end, the satisfaction you’ll derive from creating art is well beyond what you will ever imagine. Can’t wait to see your artwork pics some day, Soumya!

  6. I am speechless. I am an ardent admirer of your talent & creativity Esha.
I believe there is an artist in each one of us …… when & how we reveal & utilize that aspect is what makes us unique.
    Happy Wednesday!

    1. You are way too kind, Monika! Thank you so much for those encouraging words. 🙂
I totally agree that there is an artist in all of us and we all shine in different areas which makes each one of us unique. I’m a huge admirer of your stunning photographs and look forward to your pictures on SM. Keep them coming, dear.
Have a lovely week ahead, Monika. Look forward to your #ww this week too!

  7. What a wonderful way to clear out cobwebs. Every January I promise myself that I’ll get back to painting but somehow or the other never manage to do so.
I am glad you are nurturing your creative soul. It will definitely bring you peace .
The tree of life is truly stunning !

    1. Absolutely, Sunita! I’m trying to fit in time to nurture creativity this year, despite the time constraints and the other challenges thrown in by life and I’d like to ask you to try and get back to painting, maybe just once a month. One afternoon an hour or two. We can all do that, can’t we? Let’s do it. Lets try and create one painting to share on Social Media by the last weekend of every month. Are you game? Let me know, please. 🙂

    1. Thank you very much, Jeanna! These gel pens are available on Amazon. They are the White Sakura Gelly Roll Pens, in case you’d like to check them out. 🙂
